I am not a perfectionist...
Last night while I was doing the dishes, I was think how much a non-perfectionist I am. What I mean to say is I care, but I don't really care if things are not perfect. I am not going to let it keep me up at night. I am the Let's Get Things Done type of person. I believe I changed more and more into this type of person in graduate school. In graduate school, you have a million responsiblities. In your first year, you get your feet wet and start to realize how much you have to do and then you begin to become overwhelmed, to say the least. I once asked a graduated student, Derek, how he juggled his responsibilites and he told me that you just gotta half-a$$ things sometimes and do some things really good. That has always been my philosophy in life but much more so now. Most of the things, I am going to half-as$$ but the things I really care about I am going to do my best....
Take for an example, the toilet lid cover that I made. I had leftover fabric from hemming some really long curtains for the bathroom that I picked up for $2 at a yard sale in KY. I love this fabric. The bathroom was designed around this fabric and two sinks that we picked up for $25 each. The toilet set lid cover was a lot of work and something I have never done before. My mother (a seamstress) gave me some helpful tips. I put in some quilted batting material and sewed lines with the vertical stripes to give it a quilted look. Then I made the sides and hemmed and hemmed some more. Finally, I got the elastic in and then low and behold the cover is a little small and oddly shaped for the toilet lid! I was really upset about this and was determined to start over.
My husband speaks up and says that the cover looks good. I express my distaste for my work and told him that I was going to redo it. He merely states that the toilet is oddly shaped and it is just a toilet cover! He is right but this is coming from the man that moaned and groaned about every little flaw with the refinishing of the wood floors or painting trim in the house....
I think that I have moved on from the idea of redoing the toilet lid cover because I have a backlog of sewing projects going on. All of these are a learning experiences and I am sure if I cared enough to go at it a second try, perfection would be achieved.
